Design Inspiration

I would like to share some images and information on a project I had the great opportunity to work on with a wonderful designer here in Maine

“The concept was a multi purpose room driven by the formal integrity of the house while incorporating Gustavian style antiques from Avolli. The vintage, soft fresh finish of the delicately decorated graceful lines of the furniture lends itself to casual family living yet reflects the homeowners young, hip & sophisticated style.”
Pat Fortunato, ASID

“The first thing Pat suggested was to change the floor plan to make the house work for a young family, so we removed large cast iron radiators and replaced the front door and vestibule area with a gorgeous built-in home theater. This concept was initially met with reluctance by our architect but we pushed on and created a beautiful space that is classic yet fresh and functionally on target.”

“Once the floor plan to the living room was renovated it was time to select the wall colors, fabrics, and furnishings. I have always been a fan of Katrin Catgill’s book Creating the Look Swedish Style because of the simplicity of her furnishings and the mix of formal and informal, so we decided that this would be our inspiration. The first major piece of furniture for the room was the Gustavian clock that we acquired from Tricia Mitchell at Avolli, which was a gift for my 10th wedding anniversary. At the time that we purchased the clock we were not sure exactly where it would go but last summer it found its final resting spot by the fireplace. The clock is gorgeous and it set the tone for the rest of the furnishings in the room. Some pieces we acquired are antique and some pieces are reproductions. The Gustavian style that we chose for our home, with assistance from Pat, has given our house the direction it needed and far surpassed my expectations.”

“We look forward to working with Pat and Avolli when remodeling our kitchen and master bedroom with a Gustavian twist as well. We have young children and consider the house to be casually elegant, pretty to look at and also very livable. We spend so much time in the living room — we entertain during dinner parties, we enjoy fires in our fireplace, watch movies and play board games where the vestibule used to be, and my children practice the piano while we check emails on the desk on the far side of the room. Of course I am still looking for those perfect accessories for the bookcase, which I know will come over time. Right now we are enjoying our home and love the Swedish style.”

Josef Frank's 125th Birthday

The renowned Austrian/Swedish designer, Josef Frank, would be 125 years old today.

Born in Austria, Frank came to Sweden to flee the Nazis and ended up becoming one of the most influential Swedish interior decor artists of the 20th century.

He believed in functional modernism and created textiles, furniture and home decor items that blended the Swedish and Viennese design sensibilities.  The result was a truly unique look that is now the hallmark of contemporary Swedish design.

To learn more about Josef Frank or to see his full range of textiles, furniture and home accessories, visit Svenskt Tenn where the world of Josef Frank will open up to you.

I am very honored, and a bit humbled, by the extremely generous post that Amy Dragoo did of Avolli today at ABCD Design Inspiration. Amy is an extremely talented artist, stylist, designer and blogger based in New York City who is chronicling the journey that she is taking  with her husband as they renovate a country house.  She also has a fabulous line of bespoke stationery that was born from her passion for having 'just the right thing' for her wedding invitations, and an endless entrepreneurial enthusiasm.

"In order to create a beautiful product there must be unity, flow, texture, harmonizing color, balance and a focal point to please the eye."
It is this design philosophy that drives the inspiration for Amy’s work today.

You can follow Amy on Twitter (@abcddesigns) on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/abcdragoo) and of course at her website ABCD Design Inspiration

Thanks again Amy!

Balancing Beauty, II

For those of you that follow my blog you know that I’m crazy for interiors that have both a touch of contemporary along with a touch of antique.  There is just something balanced, textural and deep when a space has both components.  A purely ‘period’ room can feel old (shocking) yet a purely contemporary room can feel cold and impersonal.

So…when I saw this space at Plush Palate and Desire to Inspire, I stopped in my tracks…drool dripping from my chin.  It has exactly the right balance (in my opinion) of new and old.

The antique Swedish sofa and table paired with the Lucite coffee table and chairs….to die for!

The antique portrait hanging over a mirrored console….fabulous!

The pair of iron chandeliers hanging over the table with Mike Perry, Eames chairs….brilliant!

And will you be shocked to know that this all comes from the office space of  the talented Buckingham Interiors & Design in Chicago…Of course not!

(Still wiping the drool from my chin…)

It’s Friday

But not just any Friday….

It’s a July Friday.

And July Fridays are all about getting away and leaving the office behind….

to enjoy the beautiful summer weather….

to relax and spend time with friends and family.

So today I am sharing some images of a place where I would love to spend a July weekend.

It’s on the shore, in a beautiful and serene home...

where I think rest and relaxation would be welcome.

A Cure for Sleepless Nights

We have been experiencing record breaking heat here in the Northeast and after several days of this oppressiveness (which results in uncomfortable, sleepless nights) I'm just so ready for a nap.  So when I saw these images of this cool and soothing boathouse, I just had to share.  It just makes me want to slip between the sheets and doze off for a deep and luxurious sleep .
